There is a real resistance against the Christ. Perhaps it’s a resistance that goes far beyond individual belief. Verse two says, the kings of the earth have set themselves against the LORD, and against his anointed. The Hebrew word “anointed” in Hebrew is the same word that means “Christ” in Greek. The resistance is against God’s sovereignty over them, and over their jurisdiction. The Bible teaches in verse four and five that their plans will not succeed. Though the Lord may temporarily allow them to temporarily reside, he will bring judgment on their nation. The chapter turns messianic and speaks of the day of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the Lord’s anointed. Jesus Christ has been given the Father’s sovereignty (Matt. 28:18) and and the power to judge all nations will be his portion. During this time, which is also called the millennial reign, Jesus Christ’s total sovereignty will be realized. And all of the kings of the earth will bow their knee before him. So the Lord now gives piece of advice all the current kings of the earth in verse 11.
Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling
His advice continues in verse 12.
Kiss the Son lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little.
The Son here is another prophetic reference to Jesus Christ, and it serves as advice and a warning for men who are in power today to submit to the sovereignty of Christ. Our chapter ends with a reason to rejoice, but only for those who believe by putting their faith and trust I Jesus Christ. Those who believe are blessed not only with eternal life, but many other wonderful blessings that the New Testament will later reveal.
