The Letter to Paul from the Corinthians

To Paul, our father in the faith,

Grace and peace to you.

We are grateful for the gospel you brought us and for the faith we now share. Still, there are many things happening among us that we do not fully understand, though some are confident that we already see these matters clearly.

To begin with, we have developed strong preferences for different teachers. Some of us speak highly of you, others prefer Apollos, and others say Cephas has the greater authority. These differences are beginning to affect how we relate to one another. Since each of these men has served the Lord, is it not reasonable for each of us to follow the one we find most helpful?

There is also a situation we are not sure how to think about. A man among us is living with his father’s wife. Some believe this shows the freedom we have, since we are no longer under the law, and that all things are lawful for us. Others feel uneasy about it. Should we be concerned, or is this simply an example of Christian liberty?

We are also unsure how to handle disputes between our members. Some have taken their cases to the courts, and now the whole city knows that members of the same church body are suing one another. Some say this is the most practical way to resolve matters and ensures fairness. Is there any reason we should not continue this practice?

Regarding marriage, we have heard different opinions. Some say it is better not to marry at all, while others think marriage is necessary. Some who are already married are wondering if it would be better to separate in order to be more devoted, as you are. It seems you are able to serve Christ more freely without the responsibilities of a family. And if someone is married to an unbeliever, should we recommend that they separate so as not to be hindered?

We also have questions about food connected to idols. As you know, food that was once offered to idols is less expensive, and many families purchase their food this way. Since we know that an idol is nothing, some say we should not trouble ourselves with such concerns. Others still hesitate. Should knowledge settle this matter for us?

Speaking of food, we are also uncertain about how to approach the Lord’s Supper. When we gather, those of higher standing eat first and are well supplied, while others, especially the slaves, serve according to their place and receive little. This seems fitting to some, as each one keeps his proper station, yet others have raised concerns. Would you instruct us on how this should be ordered?

When we come together, many are eager to contribute. Some speak in tongues, others bring a word or a teaching, and several desire to be heard. This often leads to many speaking at once, but some believe this shows the fullness of the Spirit among us. Is it best to allow each one to speak as he is led?

Another matter concerns the resurrection. A few weeks ago, a believer who formerly served in the temple spoke among us and said that there is no resurrection of the dead, and that this life is all we have. This has caused confusion, though some think it best to focus only on the present life. What should we believe about this?

We are asking for your guidance in these matters, as we desire to live wisely and make good use of the freedom we have received.

The church in Corinth greets you.

Grace be with you.
