Psalm 16

O my soul, thou has said unto the LORD, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee.

As the fool speaks in his heart, so the wise speaks to his heart and says my delight will not be found elsewhere but in the Lord.  Somewhere in our Christian life we are led to understand that a part of repentance includes where we find our chief delights.  God forbid the one who belongs to Him should find reading His word a boring exercise, for that would certainly mean such a one has a greater delight somewhere other than the Lord.

The psalmist centers God’s word at the source of his joy. His portion and inheritance is maintained by God’s promises (v5). God’s counsel has entered into his soul and so has given him a profound feeling of security (v7).   Because he has positioned the Lord’s word at the place of power in his life, he is emboldened him to stand against adversity courageously (v8). This is the reason for his joy and gladness, it is his chief joy (v9 cf v2).

Father, may I have no other joy in comparison to the delight I have when I meditate on your word.  Your word and promises are the source of my joy that gives me strength. May you be glorified by the work you have done in my life. Amen
