Chapter 23.
This chapter depicts the humbling of Tyre. The city in that time was a very influential trade center for the Mediterranean, “the marketplace of the world” (v3). The destruction of the city will have great effect on the “world” economy, especially Egypt who’s principle traded depended on the port to send its produce all over the Mediterranean (v5).
What’s the purpose of this cities destruction? What does this tell us about the Lord? The transformation of this humbled city will be a stark contrast. People tend to put their security in great hoards of wealth, and in doing so give no thought to Jehovah who’s sovereign hand. All throughout the Bible’s narrative, God alone is to be glorified and set apart as Holy, extolled above all mankind. But the pride and ignorance of man only defiles their purpose in creation.
This is the same truth that is presented in the Gospel message. When the truth is told and the sins of people are expose either people walk with the Light that has been given to them or they choose instead to remain in darkness, hating the Light for exposing and denouncing their sin. But regardless of what people choose, they will not stop God’s sovereign hand from humbling all people.
The message of chapter 23 is consistent with the Bible’s message and trajectory towards the Gospel. Humble yourself before God, or God will in due time humble you. No one is free to rebel against God, but those who believe in Jesus Christ are free to know who God is, His yearning love, His righteous will, and share in His goodness.
