Chapter 8
This chapter provides such a wonderful work depicting the grace of God. I feel each verse deserves a great amount of meditation. It begins with a word of inspiration, “no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus”. This removes any shadow of doubt what it means to be in Christ. We enter into Christ by faith, He keeps us there by His power, and we are free from any condemnation of our sins (8:1). We are indeed free from the law that demands payment for our sins by the “Spirit of life” in Christ Jesus (8:2). The law has no power to deliver man from sins, and the only way men can meet the demands of the law is through Christ (8:3-4). The law is fulfilled by the Spirit of Christ in us because the people who have Christ’s Spirit have the mind to be subject to God’s law. Those without the Spirit and without Christ do not even have the ability to be subject to God’s law (8:5). Whoever is outside of Christ is considered “in the flesh” still and their behavior follows their nature, it doesn’t have the ability to please God (8:8). But those in Christ are not considered in the flesh any longer, but their very nature has been changed, such much that their desired to please God and follow Christ (8:9). The Spirit we received in Christ sets us free from the bondage that sin brought us into, remember there is no longer any condemnation for sin. Rather this Spirit is such that make us the adoptive sons and daughters in God’s family. We now share the same nature Christ has, and we have the privilege of calling God our father (8:15).
Being God’s children places any present suffering we endure into perspective. Any present groaning we have in our mortal bodies is nothing compared to the time when our bodies will be reconciled with God’s glory (8:18). We also know being in Christ’s spirit has the privilege of an Advocate, a master lawyer, who is speaks to the Father on our behalf and bring our lives in harmony with God’s will (8:26-27). Under this leading of the Spirit we are currently being conformed to likeness of Jesus Christ, it is His Spirit after all that is molding our new lives (8:29. This was God’s plan from the beginning and is now revealed in our time.
In Christ, God is totally for us, working all thing for our good according to His will. There really is no reason to fret any scheme that Satan or man could devise against us (8:31). Just consider, if Jesus is God’s most precious Son, and yet He delivered Christ to the cross for our benefit, then what other reason do we have to think that God wouldn’t give us anything else that would benefit our good? (8:32) Furthermore, what accusation can Satan or anyone else lay to our charge? In Christ there is no condemnation. Christ at this present time is very near to the Father ensuring our futures together with Him, without condemnation, eternally unable to be separated from God’s love. (8:35-39).
