Paul instructed Titus to stay behind to finish matters that Paul was unable to finish and ordain leaders of churches in every city. (1:5)
I can only imagine the personal training Titius received by Paul’s hand, both working with a mentor and with the people to the point where peope respected Titus to make such decisions among them.
Paul’s letter to Titus gives some clear direction for leadership candidates for each church. Elders: (usually known as deacons)
- In good standing, nothing blameworthy
- Husband of one wife
- Faithful, believing children
Bishops: (usually known as pastors)
- In good standing, nothing blameworthy
- Not stubborn
- Not short-tempered
- Not given over to alchohol
- Not violent
- Not given over to money gained by unrighteous means
- Hospitable
- Heartily support goodness and good men
- Serious when it matters
- Fair
- Holy (hard to do without the atonement of Christ!)
- Spirit led “self control”
- Use the Word to both teach and refute.
