Realizing Our Need for God – Proverbs 11

I haven’t completely determined what the biggest roadblocks are for the Chinese to come to faith, but in among the top five would be their assumption that they do not need The Lord because they are living comfortable lives.  Obviously we see this in every culture to some degree or another, but materialism in China is their god.

“My life is rich and wonderful, why do I need God?” The opposite of this statement would be, “When I’m not rich and comfortable then I will look to God to give me riches and comfort.”

In many people’s minds God doesn’t rank much higher than a personal genie.  This mindset does not at all consider sin and God’s position above all creation and over us.

“Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.” -Proverbs 11:4

“When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish: and the hope of unjest men perisheth.” -Proverbs 11:7

“He that trustest in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch” -Proverbs 11:28

These verse speak of a person need for Salvation that riches is weak to give.  Only God can deliver from the day of wrath.  Only God can give hope beyond death, but for those who disregard God to continue in sin will lose everything once they die.  God’s patience with sinners give them an opportunity to repent and humble themselves before God.  But those who ignore God and trust in their wealth will be utterly dismayed.

These truths are simple, but many will never grasp them.  For as long as their comfort holds out, so will their pride.
