“Yeah doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ” -Philippians 3:8 “By faith Moses….esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt…” -Hebrews 11:24-26
What did Paul and Moses have in common as they made their decisions about what career to take? Was it their presitgious educations? Was it being raised by noble families? No, it was Who they valued the greatest. Christ is supreme. In Christ there is more excellence. In Christ there are more riches. In Christ we gain more riches in reproach from the world than what we could gain from it’s praises being alienated from Christ. What did Paul and Moses have in common in their career decisions? Christ was worth more than anything else. No contest.
“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” -Matt. 6:21
They both shared a common prize, a common treasure. They pressed towards that mark to achieve their prize, Christ Jesus. This led them down a path serving God facing many hardships and uncomfortable situations. God manifested himself through their weakness and shortcomings. There lives became examples of the Greater working through the weaker. God did the work through them and the fruit of their labors will last for eternity.
“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”
-John 8:36
Their labor was not forced, but willful. We “GET TO” to serve, we don’t have to. Guilt didn’t drive them to serve, but they served out of a thankful spirit and from love. Like the way one should love their spouse is the way they served their God. They served in freedom being justified through faith, and willfully gave themselves to be servants.
There is no condemnation in Christ, they knew that. Paul wrote that. Their outcome and fruit of their labors were firmly ordained by Christ. They worked like it depended on them, but the trusted like it depended all on God. That’s why those who labor for Christ need to put their hands to the plow and not look back, there’s no reason to second guess choosing Christ. He equips you, He leads you, He works inside you, and we work outwardly what He does inwardly. The fruit is natural and is totally dependent on God. In Christ, our souls and our labors are as snug as a bug in a rug!
Things to consider when deciding to serve God full time:
1. Where is your real treasure/love? Don’t kid yourself.
2. Do you now serve out of guilt, or out of freedom and thankfulness?
3. Do you Get To or do you have to?
4. Will your other career choice offer the same freedoms, security, and eternal rewards as Christ can?
